The Proust Questionnaire

Oh, the inevitably awkward “About Me” box. Instead, here are my answers to the famous Proust Questionnaire, circa 1885. I may not be the next Marcel Proust but, hopefully, this will give a bit of insight into who I am.

Your favorite virtue:
To love wholeheartedly, unconditionally and without definable reason.

Your favorite qualities in a man:
The ability to make me laugh; The patience to put up with my Sex and the City marathons and raging mood swings.

Your favorite qualities in a woman:
Natural sensuality; Unapologetic intelligence; The stamina to stand 8 hours in pumps.

Your chief characteristic:
My ability of make better sense of things through written word rather than spoken.

What you appreciate the most in your friends:
The refusal to judge me; an open-minded attitude; a liking for all-night fudge brownie binges.

Your main fault:
Perfectionism; jealousy. An unhealthy addiction to chocolate HäagenDazs.

Your favourite occupation:
Trying new vegetarian recipes, browsing used clothing racks, going to the gym, etc.

Your idea of happiness:
Having someone to share a pan of Rich ‘n Moist cake with on a Friday night.

Your idea of misery:
Eating that pan of Rich ‘n Moist alone.

If not yourself, who would you be:
Carrie Bradshaw – Manolo Blahniks and fabulous writing career. Enough said.

Where would you like to live:
Venice, CA; New York City, NY; Sicily, Italy.

Your favourite colour and flower.
I love classic black and I have a soft spot for pink. Forget-me-nots.

Your favorite prose authors:
Michael Ondaatje, Margaret Atwood, Mark Z. Danielewski.

Your favorite poets:
Pablo Neruda, Dorianne Laux, Gertrude Stein.

Your favorite heroes in fiction:
Peter Pan and the Lost Boys.

Your favorite heroines in fiction:
Elizabeth Bennette, from Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.

Your favorite painters and composers:
Right now? Édouard Manet. Especially Olympia.

Your favorite heroes/heroines in real life:
You have to be your own hero.

What characters in history do you most dislike:
Shouldn’t this be obvious?

Your favorite food and drink:
Vegetarian Italian food, if ever there was such a paradox. Canadian Club whiskey and Cosmopolitans – again, a paradox.

Your favorite names:
I tend to prefer off-beat names: Icarus, Jamila, Dante, etc.

What I hate the most:
Laziness; not getting enough sleep; inconsiderate customers who throw things on the ground.

World history characters I hate the most:
Again…

The military event I admire the most:
I do not admire military events in any way.

The reform I admire the most:
Nothing that I feel strongly about has been as reformed as it needs to. But gay rights is a big one.

The natural talent I’d like to be gifted with:
I have always been insanely jealous of those who can sing even in the slightest.

How I wish to die:
Before growing so old that I cannot do the things I enjoy or be with the people I love.

What is your present state of mind:
Restless. I have been sitting on a train for nearly an hour.

For what fault have you most toleration:
I can familiarize with neurosis and relentless self-criticism. And having a sweet-tooth.

Your favorite motto:
“Fortune favors the audacious.”
